Carbon fiber was supposed to be the green material of the future. Here is why that narrative is collapsing — and what comes next.

Carbon fiber is extraordinary. It is stronger than steel at a fraction of the weight, does not corrode, and looks remarkable. For 20 years, the industry sold it as the environmentally progressive choice — less weight means less energy consumption, the logic went.

The logic was incomplete. Manufacturing a single kilogram of carbon fiber requires approximately 14 kWh of energy and releases significant CO2 if the production facility runs on fossil fuels. But the real crisis is end-of-life: carbon fiber composites cannot be recycled. They go to landfill.

The automotive and aerospace industries produce an estimated 30,000 tonnes of carbon fiber waste annually. That number is growing at 12% per year as adoption accelerates. We are building a mountain of indestructible material in the name of sustainability.

Zivv made a different choice. Our structural components use a bio-composite matrix: natural flax fibre reinforced with a plant-derived resin binder. The result is 87% of the stiffness of carbon fiber at 1.2x the weight — a trade-off we accepted because our material is fully compostable at end of vehicle life.
